Reddit schedules RSS retirement for November 13, 2026

Reddit plans to retire RSS on November 13, 2026. See what stops updating, what moderators can replace, and how to preserve research records.

The RedLens Project

Yes. Reddit says it will stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13, 2026. Its official Help Center guide confirms the date and asks moderators to set up replacement alerts beforehand.

As of November 3, 2026, that is an announced future cutoff—not a claim that every feed has already stopped working. The practical consequence is losing new Reddit updates through RSS, not losing the RSS standard or every other subscription in your reader.

What happens to Reddit subscriptions?

RSS lets a reader periodically retrieve updates from a website. When Reddit stops serving those feeds, a reader cannot keep fetching new items through them.

Inoreader’s October 1 notice makes that distinction explicit: existing Reddit feeds will receive updates for as long as Reddit provides them, then stop retrieving new posts. The notice says Reddit’s announcement offers no replacement for following communities in an RSS reader, and Inoreader cannot yet confirm an alternative.

Switching readers alone therefore is not a migration plan. Ask whether a replacement service uses Reddit’s retiring feeds or a different, supported source. Also distinguish a subscription list from saved content: exporting feed addresses does not preserve the discussions those feeds delivered.

Reddit’s stated reason is that RSS has become a surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse, according to TechCrunch’s reporting on the announcement. That is the company’s explanation, not evidence that ordinary RSS subscribers were abusing the service.

Can Discord Relay replace RSS?

It can replace some moderator alerts, but it is not a general RSS-reader replacement. Reddit’s setup guide describes sending moderation alerts to a team’s Discord or Slack channel. Links in those messages take moderators back to Reddit to review items.

The documented setup requires:

  • A Reddit moderator account with full permissions in the community.
  • A Discord server or Slack workspace with a private team channel.
  • Permission to connect that channel through a webhook—a URL that allows the app to send messages there.

The guide starts with moderation-queue alerts and supports additional alert types and up to six destinations. Reddit recommends checking every alert type the team relies on before retiring its RSS setup. Keep webhook URLs private, and restrict channel access: alerts can include report details or enabled modmail text.

For someone following communities they do not moderate, this does not provide the same subscription workflow. TechCrunch reports that Reddit offers no replacement for that use.

What to preserve before the cutoff

For a research workflow, separate notification continuity from evidence preservation:

  1. Inventory dependencies. List Reddit subscriptions, keyword filters, alert destinations, and scripts that consume feed items.
  2. Export what matters. Save the subscription list and separately export retained items where your reader permits it. Keep discussion permalinks, collection dates, and relevant text.
  3. Record the collection boundary. Log the last successful update for each feed. Silence after the cutoff must not be counted as zero community activity.
  4. Choose by task. Moderator alerts need a tested alerting replacement. Historical analysis needs stored records, not just notifications.

RedLens serves the latter task: its project documentation describes collecting public Reddit history from the Arctic Shift mirror into a local SQLite file, rather than using Reddit RSS. That separate dependency is not a guarantee of future availability, complete coverage, or live-feed freshness. For that workflow, see how to archive public user history locally.

The RSS cutoff is also separate from the public API migration schedule. If your reader or script uses the API instead, check the Reddit Data API deadline guide rather than treating November 13 as its shutdown date.
