Missed Reddit’s September 30 API deadline? Registration is still open
Reddit’s September 30 deadline was not the final registration opportunity. Check the November funding deadline and January–March 2027 access changes.

As of October 6, 2026, missing September 30 does not mean you have missed the final opportunity to register your Reddit Data API app. Reddit’s newer migration announcement tells developers to register now. It sets November 30, 2026 for migration-funding applications, warns that access removals begin January 12, 2027 for apps and users that have not registered or engaged with Reddit, and says remaining public API access ends in March 2027. For researchers, the important distinction is between registering an API integration, migrating an app, and preserving a local dataset. They are separate tasks.
Which deadline applies?
| Date | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| September 30, 2026 | Earlier registration deadline associated with gathering app-owner feedback for roadmap planning | Do not treat it as the final registration opportunity |
| November 30, 2026 | Apply for consideration for migration funding | Register and apply if your app may qualify |
| December 31, 2026 | Successful migration deadline under the 2026 App Migration Program terms | If participating in that program, complete migration and meet its requirements |
| January 12, 2027 | Reddit begins removing API access for apps and users that have not registered or engaged with its team | Register and establish contact before this date; do not assume removal waits until March |
| March 2027 | Remaining public API access ends | Plan beyond registration; Reddit names a month, not an exact shutdown day |
The earlier migration explainer describes September 30 as a registration deadline for roadmap feedback, rather than a migration deadline. The November, January and March dates come from Reddit’s subsequent announcement. December 31 governs eligibility under the 2026 migration-program terms, not a universal API shutdown.
Older advice saying Reddit has published no cutoff date is now outdated. The newer announcement supplies the March 2027 endpoint, also reported by TechCrunch on September 30.
If you missed September 30
Use the “Register your app” link in Reddit’s migration update. Before contacting the team, prepare a short inventory:
- Which app and account own the integration?
- What does it read or write: public posts, comments, moderation actions, or something else?
- Where does the code run, and where does the resulting data go?
- Which capabilities would block a move to the Developer Platform, also called Devvit?
For a research pipeline, describe the actual requirement—for example, collecting public comments into an external database—not simply “API access.” Reddit’s update asks developers to report migration blockers.
Registration is not a promise of permanent classic API access or a guaranteed bounty. The published 2026 App Migration Program terms require Reddit’s selection, app eligibility, successful migration and app review. They cover qualifying community utilities, moderation functionality and important end-user tooling; do not assume a research collector automatically qualifies. Check the funding application referenced in the newer announcement for the offer applicable to your app. 2026 program eligibility and participation requirements
Does a RedLens archive need registering?
RedLens itself has no official Reddit API integration. It reads public data through the Arctic Shift mirror and stores it in a local SQLite file without Reddit credentials. Using that documented collection route is different from owning an OAuth app that calls Reddit’s Data API. If you also maintain a separate API script, inventory and register that integration separately. RedLens project documentation
That distinction does not make future collection guaranteed. Arctic Shift is a separate archive with its own API and removal-request process; a local database is not proof of complete or current Reddit coverage. Record the source, collection date, account or subreddit scope, and known gaps alongside your analysis. Arctic Shift documentation
For the storage workflow, see Reddit API and Devvit Migration: Keep a Local Archive. Keep app registration and dataset preservation on separate checklists: registering addresses your integration’s transition; a documented local archive supports reproducible analysis.
