Make Your Reddit Profile Visible for Visa Screening

Use Reddit’s Show all setting, review NSFW visibility, verify activity while logged out, and report the correct username on your visa form.

The RedLens Project

Reddit does not have one account-wide public/private switch. To make your Reddit account as open as Reddit permits for a visa application, set Content and activity to Show all, review the separate NSFW visibility control, and inspect your profile while logged out. Provide the username requested by the visa form, not your Reddit password.

This is the closest Reddit equivalent to making a social-media profile “public” or “open.” It changes which existing public posts and comments appear on your profile; it does not publish private messages, recover deleted material, or make private communities visible.

The U.S. State Department’s September 18, 2026 announcement instructs I, TN and TD applicants to make all social-media profiles public or open beginning October 1, 2026. The announcement says online-presence review already applies to specified A-3, C-3, G-5, F, M, H, J, K, Q, R, S, T and U classifications. Check that announcement and the instructions from the embassy or consulate handling your application rather than assuming a rule for those classifications applies to every applicant.

Choose the current state of each Reddit setting; the checker identifies what remains to be done.

Set Content And Activity To Show All

The main Reddit control is called Content and activity. Reddit places it under profile curation rather than under a general account-privacy switch. Selecting Show all makes your public Reddit posts and comments visible through your profile instead of limiting the profile to selected communities or hiding its activity.

On Reddit’s Website

  1. Sign in to the Reddit account you need to disclose.
  2. Open Settings, then Profile.
  3. Scroll to Curate your profile.
  4. Open Content and activity.
  5. Select Show all.
  6. If the account has NSFW posts or comments, review the separate NSFW control and set it to show that content on the profile as well.

Do this while signed in to the exact account whose username you plan to report. If you have more than one account covered by the form’s questions, changing one profile does not change the settings on another account.

In Reddit’s Mobile App

  1. Tap your avatar to open your profile.
  2. Tap the three-line menu near the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Profile curation.
  4. Open Content and activity.
  5. Select Show all.
  6. Review the separate NSFW-content visibility setting if it applies to the account.

These menu names and available choices come from Reddit’s profile-settings documentation. Reddit says the Content and activity setting can show all activity, hide all activity, or display activity only from selected communities. It also says changes apply across Reddit platforms, including old Reddit.

That cross-platform effect means you should not need to repeat the setting change separately on the website, mobile app and old Reddit. You should still verify the public result independently, because the signed-in profile view is not the view a consular reviewer necessarily sees.

Review The Separate NSFW Visibility Control

Show all and the NSFW visibility control are separate. Selecting Show all does not by itself establish that NSFW posts or comments are displayed on the profile.

If the account has NSFW activity, inspect that separate setting and confirm that the relevant content appears when viewing the profile while logged out. If the account has no NSFW posts or comments, the setting may not affect what a visitor can see, but you should not mark it as checked merely because Content and activity says Show all.

The distinction matters because the visa instruction concerns whether a profile is public or open, while Reddit divides profile presentation across more than one control. There is no single Reddit status label that conclusively says the entire account is public. The practical test is what an unauthenticated visitor can see on the profile.

Verify The Profile While Logged Out

Do not rely only on the profile view shown while you are signed in. A logged-out inspection tests the profile as another visitor encounters it without access to your account.

  1. Copy the profile address in the form https://www.reddit.com/user/USERNAME/.
  2. Open it in a private or incognito browser window where you are not signed in to Reddit.
  3. Open the Posts tab.
  4. Open the Comments tab.
  5. Confirm that contributions from communities you previously hid now appear on the profile.
  6. Check NSFW activity if that separate visibility setting applies.
  7. Record the exact username from the profile address you verified.

If contributions from only selected communities appear, return to Content and activity and confirm that you chose Show all, not the selected-community option. If the profile appears empty, do not immediately conclude that the account has no public history. Profile curation can hide activity from the profile even when individual contributions remain available elsewhere.

Verification also prevents an account mix-up. For a profile at https://www.reddit.com/user/example_name/, the username is example_name. Confirm that the logged-out page corresponds to the identifier you intend to place on the form.

A private or incognito window is useful only if it is genuinely logged out of Reddit. If the window opens with an active Reddit session, sign out or use another browser context before treating the result as a public-view check.

Report The Username Rather Than The Display Name

Reddit permits an optional display name that can differ from the username in the profile URL. A display name is therefore not a reliable substitute for the account identifier.

Use the identifier requested by the visa form. When the form calls for a social-media identifier or handle, record the username associated with the account and verify it against the profile URL. Do not assume that a profile title, display name, capitalization style, or descriptive text is sufficient.

The State Department’s FAQ on social-media identifiers defines an identifier as a name used by an individual on a social platform. It says applicants must provide all identifiers used on every platform listed by the form during the preceding five years.

Follow the platform list, wording and date range on the form you are actually completing. The FAQ’s five-year description does not justify substituting a different period if a current form or case-specific instruction says otherwise. Likewise, the fact that Reddit is relevant to one applicant does not establish that every form presented to every applicant asks for Reddit.

Do not provide your Reddit password. The State Department says consular officers request social-media identifiers, not passwords. Making a profile open means adjusting its public presentation; it does not mean surrendering account credentials or giving someone access to private account areas.

Show All Changes Profile Presentation, Not Publication Status

Selecting Show all displays public Reddit posts and comments on your profile. Reddit describes the material controlled by profile curation as public posts and comments.

Profile visibility is not the same as the visibility of each contribution. Reddit says a post or comment hidden from your profile remains available in its original community and in on-platform and external search results. A sparse profile therefore does not prove that older activity is private or unavailable elsewhere.

The reverse limitation also applies. Show all does not:

  • restore a post or comment that was deleted or removed;
  • make a private community public;
  • expose private messages;
  • publish material that was never public;
  • provide another person with your password; or
  • recover activity that no longer exists on Reddit.

The setting is a profile-presentation control, not a publication, recovery, or account-access tool. Its relevant effect for a visa instruction is that existing public activity is no longer intentionally excluded from the profile through the Content and activity setting.

Because profile curation and contribution visibility are different, changing the setting should not be treated as an audit of everything that may be associated with the username. The logged-out check answers the narrower question: whether the profile now displays the public posts and comments Reddit makes available there.

Use The Instructions For Your Visa Classification And Case

The September 18 announcement specifically says the public-or-open instruction begins October 1, 2026 for I, TN and TD applicants. It separately states that online-presence review already applies to specified A-3, C-3, G-5, F, M, H, J, K, Q, R, S, T and U classifications.

Those statements should be read according to the classifications and timing the announcement identifies. They do not establish that every visa applicant worldwide has the same Reddit-setting requirement. An embassy or consulate may also provide instructions tied to the application it is handling.

Before relying on the setting change alone, compare three things:

  1. the visa classification in your case;
  2. the current State Department, embassy or consulate instruction; and
  3. the social-media questions and date range on the form you are submitting.

If those sources differ from an older guide or screenshot, follow the current official material applicable to the case. Screening instructions can change, so recheck them shortly before the interview and while the application remains pending. Leave the relevant Reddit visibility settings in the state required by the notice handling your case.

Do Not Replace Or Omit An Identifier

Creating a new Reddit account does not change the history of identifiers requested by a form. If the form asks for identifiers used during a specified period, substituting a new account for an older username does not answer that question.

Account activity level is also not the test stated in the draft sources. An account should not be omitted merely because it was used rarely. Whether it must be listed depends on the current form’s platform list, wording and time period.

An empty-looking profile requires the same care. It may reflect the Hide all setting, selected-community curation, deleted or removed content, or an account with no activity visible on the profile. The profile appearance alone does not determine whether the identifier falls within the form’s questions.

Record the exact username after completing the logged-out check. This connects the identifier entered on the form with the profile whose visibility you actually reviewed and reduces the risk of reporting a display name or a different Reddit account.

Correct Errors Through Case-Specific Guidance

If you already submitted a form with an incorrect or missing identifier, generic Reddit-setting instructions cannot determine the proper correction process for your case. Follow the directions provided by the agency, embassy or consulate handling the application.

If you are considering deleting, editing or otherwise changing content because of a particular immigration concern, seek advice from a qualified U.S. immigration lawyer. The technical step of selecting Show all does not answer legal questions about disclosure, prior submissions, eligibility, or how specific content may be assessed.

For the Reddit portion alone, the completed state is straightforward: Content and activity is set to Show all, the separate NSFW control has been reviewed where applicable, the Posts and Comments tabs have been checked while logged out, and the exact username—not the password or display name—has been recorded for use according to the current form.
